Mercy-IHC Repeats as a 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital

November 7, 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa—Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines was recently distinguished as a 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital for 2013 from Truven Health Analytics™, formerly known as Thomson Reuters.

The annual study examined the performance of more than 1,000 hospitals nationally. Outcome data for heart failure and heart attack patients and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and percutaneous coronary interventions such as angioplasties was analyzed.

“We are proud and honored to be among the best providers of cardiac services in the nation,” said Dave Vellinga, president & CEO of Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines. “The fact we have received this distinction five times confirms our commitment to cardiovascular excellence and our leadership role in the state as providers of the best quality care to patients, their families and the community at large.”

“The hospitals in this study have achieved higher levels of care and efficiency than their peers, demonstrating incredibly strong focus by cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and cardiovascular service administrators and staff on basic care and outcomes," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and the 100 Top Hospitals® program at Truven Health Analytics.

Performance of the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals showed:

  • Better risk-adjusted survival rates, with 41 percent fewer deaths than expected (compared with nine percent fewer than expected at peer hospitals) for bypass surgery patients.
  • Lower complication rates (35 percent lower rate of heart failure complications than peers).
  • Fewer patient readmissions to the hospital within 30 days of discharge.
  • Shorter hospital stays. Typically a bypass patient was discharged a full day sooner, and heart attack and heart failure patients about three-quarters of a day sooner.
  • Lower costs. The recognized hospitals spend $3,500 less per bypass case and $1,000 less per angioplasty.

Truven Health Analytics researchers analyzed 2010 and 2011 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, 2010 Medicare cost reports and 2012 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data. They scored hospitals in key performance areas such as risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications and core measures— a group of measures that assess process of care.
