Mercy and Iowa Heart Center surgeon David Hockmuth, M.D., first in Iowa to receive
April 18, 2012
David Hockmuth, M.D., pediatric and adult cardiothoracic surgeon with Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines and Iowa Heart Center, recently passed the American Board of Thoracic Surgery Congenital Cardiac Surgery board examination. He is the first and only pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon in Iowa to receive this distinguished certification, which has been earned by only 119 surgeons in the United States since 2009.
He has been certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and now adds the Congenital Cardiac Surgery subspecialty to his credentials.
The American Board of Thoracic Surgery created this certification to acknowledge advanced clinical competence in the treatment of children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Congenital cardiac surgery refers to the procedures that are performed to repair the many types of heart defects that may be present at birth and can occasionally go undiagnosed into adulthood.
Dr. Hockmuth has been a pediatric, adult congenital and adult cardiothoracic surgeon with Iowa Heart Center since 1992. He has completed more than 2,000 surgical procedures on pediatric patients at Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines.
Born and raised in Iowa City, Dr. Hockmuth earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Iowa. He then completed a surgical residency at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA; and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at West Virginia University Medical Center in Morgantown.
Each year, Dr. Hockmuth is part of a team of Mercy-based health care providers who travel to the impoverished areas in the cities of Campeche and Merida in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. The group selects 30 children who otherwise would not receive the livesaving cardiothoracic surgeries they need. Dr. Hockmuth has performed these surgical procedures since 1992. The program has helped nearly 1,000 children–many of whom suffered from congenital heart defects– through 2011
